This is the Engineering and Event Blog that is maintained by the team. After each meeting one or more of the team members writes up what we did and what they enjoyed obout the meetings.

Competition #2 (12/6/09)

On Sunday, Dec. sixth, we attended second level competition, Regional. We worked hard all day and ended up being very tired by the end of the day.

Of course, it was a competition, so our highest table run out of all four runs was a 360, which is the best we could have gotten last year, but this year it was slightly disapointing, especially after all of our work. We ended up fifth on the table.

Despite all of the table problems, our judging sessions seemed to go well. We also drew on a poster with our team symbol, everyone's signatures, and of course a large: LEGO GUARDS.

At the end of the day, we listened at the awards ceremony. We were one of sixteen teams advancing to state. Althogh we didn't win a single award, I would rather move on to state and win none. I am excited and I can not wait for state.

The meeting on 12/4/09

Today was a great day. First when we got there we started by doing some robot runs. Faith and Bobby got a 400!!!:) It was the first time I had seen a 400. They did it with 23 seconds to spare! Then we did some team double-jump while eating pizza for lunch. It was really fun and interesting. after that we did some enginering judging. I think our team did a good gob. It was also a good learning experience for me. We also did some presentation run throughs and judging. Then Andrew, Alan, and I built a sheild for the light sensors. It worked really well. After that we all played double-jump while we waited for our parents. Thank you Owen and Mathew for the pizza and thanks to our coaches and mentors.

todays meeting

Yesterday, Faith and I practiced table runs for 3 hours. We were getting 400 points most of the time!

Today we started by doing some table runs (got another 400) and getting some programing done and now the table looks pretty good. We practied the pesentation and also did some judging sessions and ended the day with some double jump!

Evo 5.??

We were having some problems with the latest robot, Evo 4.  I spent a while fixing, and rebuilding certain parts of this robot.  The problem was that with the new robot design, (with the brain and arm further forward), caused the robot's center of gravity to shift too far forward, and it could not turn and drive when attachments were added.  I shifted the arm motor back by a few spaces, and did the same with the brain.  I also rebuilt a bit of the chassis, to incorperate secure attachment places for the arm.  I am happy with the outcome, and as always, I learned even more about building robots!

Lego Guards on 11-30-09

We have just foun out that our Regional Competition will be this week and not in three weeks as we thought! This means that we have very little time to prepare...Also, our robot is giving us serious problems. However, we are Lego Guards and we will pull through as a team. This means lots of extra time spent, and tons of effort. However, the team is excited about an up-coming presentation for the MAC! I am also happy about revising our amazing line follow algorithms to work perfectly.

The meeting on 11/30/09

Today was a great learning experience. First when I got there we had a round table. Then Andrew taught me some complex programming like how to turn line following in to a my block and write the speed and other things like that. I also had to write my own line follow program. It was really interresting to write my own program. Then Faith, Andrew, Aydan, and I stayed longer and learned that our robot did not work verry well :(, but it was still a great learning experience.

Today's Meeting (11/30/09)

Our competition was changed so we are this Sunday! Today every one pulled together but still, after lots of programming, we realized that the robot did not have enough traction so we needed to rebuild it!

While the robot was being programed by Faith, I was teaching Drew line follow programming. He was learning quickly, and understands our line following now. Still, the robot was bad and we, the programmers, had nothing to do. The next few days we would have to work especially hard to get us going!

Monday meeting-11-23-09

We had another great meeting today! The meeting started with a round table, where we discussed our judging rubrics from the District Competition. We talked about how we can improve our scores. The builders also revised some arms and made a lot of progress on a new robot. We had an awesome team challenge devised by our mentor Karl! It was kinda like double-jump meets risk meets chess. We had a really great time. Then, Andrew and I worked with Owen and Drew on some basic line following. What a great meeting!

The meeting on 11/23/09

Today was a great day. First when we got there we went over our scores for teamwork and things like that. After that we thought about how we could make are presentation and engenering better. Then we worked on contacting essential services in our community. Andrew and I emailed CALTRANS and some hotels in our area. After that we had lunch. After that Andrew taught Owen and I to do some basic programing. This was a great meeting.

Monday Meeting

Today I worked on the new robot, I had gotten the base and most of the arm done last week, but I ended up rebuilding the whole arm attachment, and I attached it much stronger to the chasis, and put on the actual arm as well.
